The Second Annual Pink Angels Spring Membership event will be held on Wednesday, April 27 from 7:30-9:30 p.m. at the Weston residence of Robbie Krongold-Cohen. The event will bring together women from all parts of Broward and Dade County and encourage them to become Pink Angels; to make a difference in the lives of women in our community who are being treated for breast cancer. The Pink Angels were founded in 2006 by a group of women, many of whom were breast cancer patients of Memorial Breast Cancer Center, with the goal of educating the women in our community on the benefits of leading a healthy lifestyle and assisting those undergoing cancer treatment who may not be able to afford the products and services of the Image Recovery Center, a multidisciplinary center located at Memorial Hospital West which carries wigs, prosthetics and beauty products sensitive to the needs of chemotherapy and radiation patients.
Since its inception the Pink Angels have raised over $150,000 to help underserved cancer patients in our community and hosted many Tours & Talks of Memorial’s Breast Cancer Centers at Memorial Regional (Hollywood) and West (Pembroke Pines) locations. The Tours & Talks offer the opportunity for our community to learn more about Memorial’s Breast Cancer Centers and about the latest in multidisciplinary treatment modalities for breast cancer.
This year’s goal for the Pink Angels Spring Membership event is to increase membership to 400 women who serve as ambassadors for the group. Members are encouraged to host a Tour & Talk, and serve on the fundraising, membership and marketing committees. All members of the Pink Angels support and attend the Annual Pink Angels Healthy Me Luncheon held in late October at the home of Denise and Peter Wittich.
This year’s membership event will also serve as platform to launch the Junior Pink Angels, the brainchild of Paul Newman, son of Pink Angel and Executive Committee Member, Carolyn Newman. He presented his $265 gift to the Breast Cancer Center staff and encouraged other girls and boys to support his cause and that of his mother’s. Soon after, 8 year old Anna Kopsick presented Memorial’s Breast Cancer Center with a $125 donation she earned doing a bake sale. The Co-Chairs of the Junior Pink Angels are, Alexa Ramer, Freddi Newman and Rachel Aron. Together they established the Junior Pink Angels mission statement and various committees for any person 8-18 years of age who would like to help the women in our community undergoing treatment for Breast Cancer.
In addition, the Pink Angels will receive a special donation of Arm Candy for the Image Recovery Centers of Memorial Hospital from Warrior Wear Inc., co-founders’ Carolyn Newman, Lauren Aron and Jolene Paul. “30% of women who have or have had breast cancer will develop a debilitating and often painful condition called lymphedema. We feel it is important to provide women with a way to dress up their compression sleeves and ultimately feel and look better “ said Lauren Aron.
